Proving your value and showcasing your contributions as an admin can feel challenging or even intimidating. That’s why we invited Skevi Constantinou, international speaker, trainer, and founder of The PA Way, to share her insights. Read on to discover actionable tips on building trust, demonstrating impact, and positioning yourself as an indispensable strategic partner.

In your experience, what makes an assistant truly invaluable to their stakeholders?

Skevi Constantinou: I believe through strategic planning, emotional intelligence, being proactive, and staying one step ahead makes any assistant invaluable. An assistant is a powerhouse of skills and communication. Through problem solving, being organized, and continuing their learning journey, assistants enhance their worth and their stakeholders functionality.

What skills do you think are most critical for assistants to demonstrate their value effectively?

Prioritization, communication, and listening skills. These are the three crucial skills that enhance your value, which I discovered during my own time as an EA. These skills are what also prepare you to delve more deeply into strategic planning, organizational alignment, and professional relationships.

How can assistants build trust and credibility with their stakeholders early in their working relationship?

Demonstrate professionalism, understand your stakeholders needs, be proactive, adaptable, lean in for support, ask questions, and always listen and communicate!

How can assistants move beyond traditional tasks to position themselves as strategic partners within their organizations?

Assistants can begin to position themselves for strategic roles by showing initiative, understanding the business they are working within, communicating clearly about key metrics, anticipating stakeholder priorities, and acting before they are asked. Remember: being adaptable when needed is also key.

What are some common challenges assistants face in showcasing their value, and how can they overcome them?

During my time as an EA, I found that the narrative of “just” being an assistant was also experienced by many like-minded colleaguesin fact, it's incredibly common. When facing this inaccurate judgement, you have to show that you're "more" than the traditional role. Believe that you can level up if you want to, and that the profession is constantly evolving, providing many with an exciting and worthwhile career!

In order to showcase your value, create reports and presentations to show where you have been of great support or usefulness. For example: a project or a time when you saved the company money.

I often say to our members at The PA Way to “show” the data so that they can “grow”measure your metrics and show how you have been of key influence.

Why is continuous learning important for assistants, and how can they prioritize professional development in such a busy role?

Remember to never stop learning and that consistency is key. Whether through networking or being a part of a professional network, make sure to make the most of training resources or groups where you have access to like-minded admin professionals.
