At APC 2024 in Aurora, CO, a dynamic panel of leaders gathered to discuss the State of the Profession and what’s next for administrative professionals. Moderated by ASAP Editor Leah Warwick, the conversation was filled with powerful insights from Lucy Brazier, Candice Burningham, Concetta Green, Ann Hiatt, and Paul Pennant, who each shared their perspectives on the evolving role of admins in the workplace.

Before diving into the panel discussion, Leah shared some key findings from ASAP’s 2024 State of the Profession and State of Executive Administration Reports, shedding light on the current landscape for admins. Notably, Leah highlighted that career advancement is becoming increasingly skills-based, rather than relying on formal titles or tenure. In fact, the reports revealed a growing discrepancy where admins with the same title—Executive Assistant—may have vastly different responsibilities and skill levels, from handling tactical support work to managing strategic, Chief of Staff-level duties. Additionally, titles, tenure, and education are no longer the only factors defining advancement—what you can do and what you’ve accomplished are now the true markers of success. This shift in expectations set the stage for the panelists to offer valuable advice on how admins can navigate the changing landscape in the years to come.

Here are some key takeaways that every admin should pay attention to as we head into 2025 and beyond:

1. Create Your Own Career Roadmap

Ann Hiatt shared how she invented the role of Chief of Staff at Google, a position that didn’t even exist at the time. Her advice? Don’t wait around for promotions or traditional career ladders. Instead, make your own path by aligning your personal goals with your company’s needs. By developing a shared “scorecard” with her executive, Ann was able to grow her influence and responsibilities, even without a formal promotion. It’s all about having a clear vision and taking proactive steps toward it.

2. Confidence is Key

Concetta Green brought up an important point: many admins struggle with low self-esteem and burnout, which can hold them back. But here’s the good news—confidence is a game-changer. She urged everyone to get clear on who they are before they show up to the office. When you know your value and set clear boundaries, your mind opens up to new opportunities. "If you're clear on who you are, you can do anything," Concetta said. Remember, believing in yourself is the first step toward unlocking your full potential.

3. Take the Shot—Even if You Don’t Have All the Qualifications

Candice Burningham had one bold piece of advice: take the shot. Many women, especially in admin roles, won’t apply for a job unless they meet 100% of the qualifications. But Candice urges admins to take the risk—because what's the worst that can happen? "They can say no. Oh well. Next." Whether it's asking for a promotion, attending a conference, or stepping up to lead a project, taking chances is how you create your own opportunities.

4. AI Isn’t the Enemy—It’s a Tool

Paul Pennant shared a handy tip for admins looking to leverage AI in their work: use ChatGPT’s “custom instructions” feature to adjust its responses to fit your style. This helps you sound more authentic and personal when using AI, rather than relying on generic responses. But more importantly, Paul emphasized that AI is just one tool—your process expertise and ability to implement plans are still superpowers. Administrative professionals are uniquely skilled in getting things done, and that’s something no machine can replicate.

5. You’re in the Driver’s Seat of Your Career

Ann Hiatt wrapped up the panel by stressing the importance of taking charge of your career. Don’t wait for someone else to define your role or your potential. Instead, shape your own career path. "Be the one that decides the skill set, the influence, the authority level you want to have," Ann said. And don’t forget to keep growing. Data and analytics are becoming essential skills for admins, especially as AI continues to evolve, so getting comfortable with these tools will help you stay ahead.

6. Embrace the Power of Process and Procedure

Lucy Brazier offered a powerful insight on the value of process and procedure. She pointed out that many administrative professionals are extremely skilled at organizing and implementing systems—skills that are vital to business success. "You have a real superpower when it comes to process and procedure," Lucy said. Being the person who can take an idea and turn it into action is invaluable. Admins are uniquely positioned to manage processes that others may overlook, and this ability to get things done is a skill that will only grow in importance. Lean into this strength to prove your value in any organization.

Final Thoughts

As the admin profession continues to evolve, the panelists all agreed on one thing: The future is in your hands. Whether it’s building your confidence, embracing AI, or taking bold career risks, the key to success lies in owning your career path and continuously growing your skills. With the right mindset, there’s no limit to what you can achieve in 2025 and beyond.
