Our Admin of the Month for March 2024 is Zach Brown, Executive Assistant at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.
Check out Zach's advice video below!
I was working as a registration specialist at the Medical University of South Carolina in my hometown of Charleston when my husband received a job opportunity that we couldn’t pass up. We moved to Florida in December of 2019 and made a personal decision to find a job that had better work-life balance for us. I was hired as an administrative assistant for AdventHealth Fish Memorial in Orange City.
I was able to quickly show the leadership team in the department that I was able to do data analysis, presentation creation, educational training, and office management. I wanted the role to be more than only answering phones and taking notes. I worked with my supervisor on how I could be an integral part of her team and add value to our department. This allowed me to showcase my skills. These skills, along with my background in medical registration, led me to serving for over a year as a trainer for the company-wide transition to a new medical record system.
After the project concluded, I was offered a position as executive assistant to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer at one of our larger campuses, AdventHealth Daytona Beach. I have also been able to position myself as an integral part of this executive team by showcasing my skills of data analysis and project management.
I enjoy being part of a fast-paced hospital executive team that is always on the go and ready to pivot to something else at the drop of a hat. I enjoyed playing video games growing up, so I liken the calendar work we do to Tetris. We find a way to fit multiple meetings that have differing lengths into a schedule that is already packed full. I like the challenge of figuring out how best to prioritize my executives’ day and week.
I am very proud of the fact that I can bring issues I hear from frontline team members directly to the executive offices. Sometimes, front line team members feel unheard. I am a big advocate of relaying these unheard sentiments to the executives so employee concerns can be addressed.
I am proud that I have pursued and received both the PACE and CAP designations. This has helped others understand that assistants can be an executive’s partner in day-to-day work.
I’ve only recently received my certifications, but I have truly enjoyed diving into all the resources that are on the ASAP website. I’ve been able to take some of those tool kits and not only use them in my work, but I’ve been able to pass that information on to other admins.
My professional superpower is teaching and training others. I’ve always had a passion to show people new things and teach them best practices. I also love learning new ways to streamline daily activities, and collaborating electronically in this new post-COVID world. I’ve been able to utilize several new artificial intelligence tools to help with meeting notes, action items, and presentation creation. These tips and tools have helped several other admins I work with in their daily duties as well.
