How did you get into the administrative field, and how has your role evolved since you started?
When I was 12 years old, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in a city job training program that was sponsored under the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). I held a position as an administrator at my elementary school and then my middle school. After having many other jobs between the summers and academic school years, I accepted an administration position in the Office of the Registrar at my university. Although I graduated with a degree in communications from my university, I went straight into administration after accepting an administrative assistant role at The University of Texas at Austin—also in the Office of the Registrar.
What’s your favorite part of being an administrative professional?
I enjoy the complexities and variety in administration. You have many levels and specializations within the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
What project or accomplishment from the past year are you most proud of?
I made a pivot from the public sector to the private sector, working for a public policy firm that I believed in and had immense respect for. My biggest accomplishment was moving into a new opportunity after taking respite for a year and leaning into my core interests as a public administrator.
In your opinion, what value do administrative professionals bring to their company?
As an administrator, you can set the tone for the organization and have more influence than you realize. You bring the creativity, knowledge, and operational structure. Your scope goes beyond the job description!
What’s your biggest source of motivation in your work?
Having a network of peers and colleagues across the profession as well as the American Society of Administrative Professionals (ASAP) and the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) Networks really helps you know there are others steeped in knowledge who are readily available to offer their professional wisdom and guidance. The administrative profession continues to grow and change. When I decided to attend graduate school, I knew I wanted to specialize in Public Administration. Having my certifications and MPA (Master, Public Administration) has provided me with the opportunity to progress, and that is very motivating.
What would you say is your professional superpower?
Ownership of what I do not know and figuring it out!
